A. Duie Pyle Empowers the Next Generation Through the Latta Scholarship

The 100-year-old leading transportation provider is invested in the future of its employees’ families by awarding scholarships for higher education

WEST CHESTER, Pa. – September 23, 2024 – A. Duie Pyle (Pyle), the premier 100-year-old family-owned and operated provider of asset and non-asset-based supply chain solutions, reaches a new milestone, as its scholarship program will award over $106,000 to 24 students this year. This achievement comes during the company’s momentous centennial celebration.

In 2013, former company president Steve O’Kane was preparing to retire, but he and his wife, Cheryl, wanted to honor the company’s ownership while also supporting its employees. They brainstormed ideas and ultimately decided to create a scholarship fund to provide financial assistance for higher education or trade school for employees’ children. With the support of the Chester County Community Foundation, the Eleanor and James Latta Jr. Scholarship Fund was established to honor the second generation of Pyle ownership, who was highly respected by employees and instrumental in preparing the third generation for future success and growth.

The first three scholarships were awarded the following year, with a total of $15,000 presented to those recipients. With this year’s total surpassing the $100,000 threshold, the scholarship fund has grown 606% since its inception, having awarded more than $460,000 to the children of the Pyle People – the collective term used to describe the company’s team members.

“Our Pyle People and their families are a big reason we are successful as a company, and we wouldn’t be here today without them,” said Peter Latta, Chairman and CEO at Pyle. “We know that access to education is key to building a better future, and through the Latta Scholarship, named after my parents, Eleanor and Jim Latta, we’re able to honor our legacy while providing essential support for our employees’ and their families’ educational aspirations. We believe in hard work and opportunity and want to help the next generation succeed by giving them the resources they need to thrive.”

“The Latta Scholarship is more than just financial assistance; it’s a commitment to our community’s future,” said Billy Latta, Director of Enterprise Services at Pyle. “We recognize that education opens doors and creates pathways for success. By supporting our employees and their families in their educational pursuits, we are not only honoring our family’s values but also investing in a stronger, more vibrant community for everyone.”

Scholarships are available for the children and stepchildren of qualified Pyle People enrolled in a two- or four-year undergraduate program or an approved trade or technical school. This year, 40 students submitted applications. The selection process prioritizes academic achievement and community service to ensure that recipients embody the values of the Pyle family. The selection committee is made up of impartial members who are not employees of the company.

“Being a recipient of the Latta Scholarship is a tremendous honor,” said Angelo Rodriguez, scholarship recipient. “It not only enhances my educational opportunities but also inspires me to strive for excellence and give back to my community.”

“Pyle’s commitment to supporting its employees truly reflects its core values and demonstrates genuine care for its families,” said Angel Rodriguez, parent of scholarship recipient and a former driver, now frontline leader at Pyle. “This scholarship enables our children to realize their aspirations and highlights Pyle’s commitment to enriching the lives of its employees and their families. We’re grateful for the assistance the company has afforded us to support our child’s continued education.”

“I am extremely honored to have been selected as a recipient of the Eleanor and James Latta, Jr. Scholarship,” said Sienna DeMedio, scholarship recipient. “The scholarship places great emphasis on personal academic achievement as well as contribution to the community, which motivate me to prioritize these important areas throughout my college career.”
